Do not think that just because it is easy to pick out pretty-looking flowers and amazing water features that it will be a snap to decorate your garden. Front yard landscaping is both an art and a science. Art because it requires an eye for the elements of design such as color, shape and texture, and science because proper landscaping requires knowing measurement and depth of the land to be able to fully utilize these in your favor. If you are interested in working on a landscaping project, then there are some things that you may want to keep in mind to be able to create a beautiful and lasting work of art.
The simpler it is – the better. If you are able to catch the eye of people who are passing by with less, then the better job you are doing of decorating your lawn or garden. Sometimes, the more objects there are in your lawn, the more clunky and crowded it looks, no matter how beautiful or expensive they are. Keeping in mind center theme will allow you to pick out which decorations you need without going overboard.
Consider your home. Your home and your lawn are not separate entities, and should not look so. Think about what theme or color scheme your home has, and if it is possible that your lawn reflect the same. For example, if your home is full of light and pastel colors, then it may be a good idea for your lawn or garden to have a lot of brightly colored flowers, and deeply green grass for a flowing, colorful effect.
Do not forget your spacing. Your lawn is the path to your home, and guests need to be able to move through it and within it. Do not overcrowd the objects in your lawn, and make sure that there is at least 5 - 6 feet of space between the larger objects on your lawn, such as stone statues and water features, if there are any. Not only will this give a feeling of open space on your lawn, it also allows for an illusion of wider space.
Remember, it is for the long-term. One of the most important things you will want to keep in mind is that your lawn is going to pretty much look how it does for a long time, so you had better be happy with how it looks. You can take inspiration from neighbors, but do not give into trends or making your lawn “fit in” with the neighborhood because you are going to regret doing so. You will want to design your lawn your way because not only is it more satisfying; it will ensure that you think about your designs all the way through, not only for today, but for the whole year round.
The more thought and care you put into creating and designing your lawn, the more you will love the turnout. Remember, the best works of art are not made from prodigious skill; it comes from a deep passion for the work, and a lot of forethought before the act!
