It’s is hard to believe that another year has gone by already. The new year will provide an opportunity to make some changes to your garden. Reflection and evaluation always is a part of New Year’s resolutions and your garden and landscape is a good place to apply some of that reflection and evaluation to this time. Think about what was successful and what it was that you liked about your landscaping this past year. Also think about what was not so successful with your landscaping this year. By engaging in this reflection, you can start out the new year thinking about better plant choices and better gardening techniques.
How about trying something new this year with your landscape? If you shape the hedges in your landscaping, try pruning less this year. This will allow the hedges to display their natural shape and it will give you more free time to work on other aspects of your landscaping.
If you have never tried planting native plants; why not try some this year. Native plants have the benefit of being able to withstand most of the weather that your region can throw at them. If you are not sure what plants are native to your region, you can always ask the professionals at your local nursery.
Remember to prepare the soil by mixing in plenty of compost to help feed your new landscaping experiments. If you are not in the habit of preparing the soil with plenty of compost, you will be in for a pleasant surprise when you do.
It is a new year and is the time to start planning for the landscaping changes that you will be making this year. So as the snow melts away and the temperatures start to rise, you will be ready to enjoy your hobby of landscaping. The key thing to remember is to have fun and try new ideas to keep your landscaping interesting for years to come.
